Network marketing is really the gist of online marketing for any business. MLM, Direct Sales, Affiliate Marketing…the list goes on. All in all, you are network marketing so the basic foundation is the same.
Many shy away from MLM (Multi-level Marketing) from hearing negative comments and failures. There are as many success stories in all marketing efforts as there are negative ones. It’s a matter of whether you work at building your business or not.
There are still so many ads and opportunities that promise you the moon, but the average person is not going to obtain those results. Thus why there are income disclaimers. You are not going to get rich overnight no matter what you do. Well, unless you get the lucky numbers for the lottery, though your chances here online are far better (and less costly).
MLM or Multi-Level Marketing is a booming industry with hundreds if not thousands of opportunities just waiting for you. The business model is similar to Direct Sales. You still need to sell a product or service, you still need customers, and you still need to build a team. Without a team and teamwork, nothing much is going to happen.
My biggest concern with MLM was the “mark-up” of products. There is usually a middle man in there providing a product to a company who then has to mark up the price to its distributors. And most companies make a lot of money on this markup. Some companies are catching on and are pricing their products far more fairly for the market place.
Can you be successful with MLM? Of course you can. If you are determined to work for it. The work ethic here and in network marketing is paramount to your future. There are a lot of ways to market and promote, but only one way is really going to bring you lasting success. That is to build relationships and provide people with a product or service that eases their struggle or pain.
It would be remiss of me to not discuss the direct sales industry. In many ways, they are so close to an MLM that it’s hard to discern the two. There is still a mark up on products, there are still distributors and there are still team building activities.
So what’s the difference? In the long run, not a whole lot. It all depends on what you want to call your business. If the product is sent direct to the customer, it’s direct sales. If you hold parties and meetings, it again is direct sales. You are presenting directly to consumers and you are selling directly to consumers.
I’ve had to come to the conclusion that both business models are relatively equal in stature in today’s marketplace. I’ve even had to look at the potential of various MLM vs Direct Sales opportunities and am giving it a go to see and feel the difference.
Making MLM or Direct Sales Work For You
There’s no doubt about it, marketing online — no matter what you want to call it — is Network Marketing. Without a “network” of people you know, there is no business. So many people are afraid of this business model, yet happily jump in with the old standbys like Avon, Tupperware and MaryKay. Love these companies. Don’t get me wrong. They are long-standing and reputable opportunities. Many people have found great success with them, but it’s nothing to do with whether they are MLM or Direct Sales. It has to do with the NETWORK someone has to build a business with.
This is not easy. Working online, building a business through network marketing, word of mouth, is time consuming and at times very frustrating. What we do know is that for a very, very small amount of money, we have the opportunity to be in business for ourselves. If you opened a store in town, would you give up in a month or two if money wasn’t coming in fast enough? No. Would you close the doors if customers weren’t buying? No. You would figure out what wasn’t working for you and learn a better way.
This is how network marketing is. We have to be continually learning new ways, new methods, new avenues to get our information out there. Building any business takes time, and you need to work diligently and consistently in order to make the lifestyle change you want to see happen. Don’t give up. Build and network, learn and grow.
MLM or Direct Sales? Let’s just call it Network Marketing and allow us ALL to be part of the big picture.
